Attendance
Cheshire students had  an average 94% attendance rate at school over 2010 and the year level breakdown is as follows: Prep 95%, Grade One  89%, Grade Two 88%, Grade Three  99%, Grade Four 89%, Grade Five 98% and Grade Six 100%.

The Cheshire School complies with the Education Act (1958) that requires children of school age to be in full-time attendance at school.  Please see the information below for detail on the attendance policy.

  • All enrolled students are required to attend school unless reasonable and valid grounds exist for them to be absent.
  • Illness is reasonable grounds for absence.
  • Parents have a responsibility to ensure that their children attend school regularly, and are only absent if unwell or if absolutely necessary.
  • Parents have a responsibility to provide a written note or telephone call to the school explaining why an absence has occurred.
  • All student absences are recorded in both the morning and the afternoon by teachers.
  • Government departments and enrolment auditors may seek student attendance records.
  • Staff will contact parents with high levels of unexplained or unapproved absences, with the view to developing and implementing strategies to minimise absences.

Student Satisfaction
Each student writes of their experience at Cheshire at the completion of their program. Below are examples from students who graduated in 2010.

Grade 5 boy – aged 12
“Before I came to Cheshire my behaviour was horrible, I smashed windows hot teachers, students and cars but all of that behaviour has changed, my school work was pretty bad like my math which I hated the most, my spelling, and my English.  I hated reading, now I love to do all of my work and reading, I have heaps of friends and I know that I will do well at my new school. In my old school I had friends that weren’t friends we had fights all the time but now that has changed a lot I have friends that I can count on like Julian who is my best friend here. We get along very well together, if you looked at me and Julian when we’re playing it’s like we’re related that’s how well we get along and that’s a true friends reaction when he or she finds the right person.

We do fun things at Cheshire like swimming, Circus Oz, Fishing, Halloween, Christmas, and Easter. We watch DVDs, do Christmas shopping, cooking, go on computers, and play on the board games but you have to be good if not you get the consequences like sitting off at break, miss out on fun things and do boring work which I can say that because it has happened to me quite a few times. I love it here at Cheshire it is the best school I have been to, it has helped me in so many ways and I have Diana and Leonie to thank for it, I am grateful to have been here at Cheshire, and I hope that the other students have a wonderful time here and I will miss Cheshire allot.
And lastly I would like to thank for family for bringing me here, and being there when needed.”

Grade 4 boy – aged 10
“Before I came to Cheshire I never got my work finished. I couldn’t control my anger and I started every fight in school.
Now I can control my anger and I have never missed an excursion. I like all the fun stuff like gym, circus, swimming and the dinner. I have made two good friends, Jack and Jules.
I wouldn’t have achieved this thanks to Sharon and Diana. Thanks to my mum for letting me come to this school now I know I can make friends and control my anger”

Grade 2 boy – aged 7
I would sit under the table and not do my work.  I would sulk and not look at people.  I did not have friends.  Now I work and look at people when I talk and I have friends.  I am happy now.  I will keep doing my work at my new school and make lots of friends.
Parent Satisfaction
All parents complete a survey at the conclusion of their child’s program. Two examples taken from feedback in 2010 follow:

“The Cheshire program has been a wonderful start to introducing Jeffrey to the school system in a small, safe and positive environment. Cheshire has established the foundations for Jeffrey to continue to learn and thrive in an environment usually confronting and overwhelming to him. It has also taught him HE CAN DO IT!! There should be more programs like this out there in the community”
“The Cheshire Program has been a life line for David and my family – your commitment to us has been overwhelming and to see the positive changes in David in a year has been wonderful.”
